Johnny "the Kicker" Cueto

Post by Been There »

I get a "kick"..."where have I heard that word before? reading about Johnny Cueto wanting 6 yrs. $120 MM contract to play ball. I don't see any team paying "Kicker" Cueto that sum. This reminds me of the Kyle Lohse deal, where wanting such a large contract, only ending up for less way late signing with Brewers. I don't see Cueto robbing Fort Knox.

There's a part of me that thinks he'll hold out till after the season starts. There's been a little talk about possibly an arm injury there, and taking till May\June might be better for him healthwise. That way he'll also have a better idea who's going to contend. He might even think about signing a one year deal, and reapproaching the market next year when the pickings are slimmer.

Someone on MLB Netwrok yesterday predicted he ends up on the Cardinals.

I think he'll get around 6/120.

This would shock me. Especially since he's not tied to draft pick compensation.

That would be "the worst Moz's all time move" in baseball history. I could see the Cards fans organizing a boycott on this.

Me too but he's actually a great fit for us, but with the history I don't see it happening.

Cueto will be 30 next season.

His ERA+ for the last 5 seasons:

2015: 117 (151 with Cinci before the trade)
2014: 163
2013: 135
2012: 148
2011: 171

Zimmermann just got 5/$110MM at the same age, for 110-141-116-136-120 respectively.

Unless Cueto is seriously injured, he'll likely get an as-good or better deal that Zimmermann got. 6/$120MM feels high on years (I think he'll get 4-5), but in the right ballpark for AAV.

However I don't think the Cardinals will be interested.
