Spotify alternatives

Post by ghostrunner »

Anyone have experience with Tidal or Apple Music lately? From what I understand they pay artists the most fairly. I’ve been thinking about ditching Spotify for a while and that’s my biggest concern, more so than the Rogan thing.

Specifically wondering how switching from Spotify to either went.

I find it most useful for when I'm walking or running or in the car. Easy to create playlists or listen to full albums, no ads. I know you can hear most stuff on youtube, but it would also take a lot more data, be slower, and have all the ads. And I'm not sure if or how easy it is to create a youtube playlist.

I don’t know enough to compare. I’m using Spotify because my daughter is on it and we can share playlists. For the most part it seems to have most of the music I’m looking for (at least it did before the Rogan thing). I also have the majority of my owned music on iTunes loaded onto my phone but didn’t explore going with Apple because of her. I also haven’t delved too deeply into the world of podcasts but that will change if we ever get to start traveling again.

Plus I can grab things like heyzeus’ Dope Ass 90s Party playlist off Spotify.

What’s the advantage of YouTube music? Does it include albums or just what’s been made into music videos?

I still use Pandora all day at work. I have stations that are over 12 years old. Some of my favorite artists are ones that I discovered on Pandora.

I didn't even realize YouTube had a separate music service, though it looks like Google Play was merged with that. Seems like the big limitation is you can't do other things on the phone while listening to music, which is true of regular YouTube. If you lock your phone or go to something else the music stops. Unless you pay for premium. I'm already paying premium for Spotify to avoid ads and skip and play specific tracks - you can't do that on most services unless you pay. Free Youtube appears to be pretty unique in that respect.

My main reason for switching is this is what each service pays musicians.

I listen to a fair amount of indie artists still, and it bugs me how little they pay out per stream. So I've been thinking about dumping Spotify for a while.

Pandora-like services don't work for me because I like to keep playlists and play specific tracks when I want. I only occasionally use the Pandora-like radio features in Spotify. For new stuff I use Spotify's Daily Mixes and Discover suggestions, which are always pretty good.
