It’s probably better if the bottom falls out. Being the scrappy team with the $50 million payroll that fights for a playoff spot will only encourage more seasons with no spending.

I was thinking the opposite - a crummy start like the Red Sox then catch fire. But that would’ve just spawned complacency from ownership. So I agree with you. Fans got a taste of what the future could be and will be clamoring for the requisite improvements (and corresponding spending) to be made to get there.
