We could be 5 - 27 with a different manager too.

matheny's questionable starter/bullpen management has cost this team AT LEAST 2 wins. i was being generous with my figures.

you could probably make an argument that batting diaz 7th/8th on a regular basis has cost a win or two as well

I think better than that honestly. A combination of how he's handled pitching and how he's lost the clubhouse.

Agreed.

And the 18-1 Patriots would agree as well.

2004 was a fun season, but that team will always be stained with losing in the World Series.

And these will be the stakes for the Cubs in October. If they win it all, it will be the greatest thing ever for their fans. If they lose at any point, they will be just another great regular season team who fell short in October.
i still think of the 07 patriots as one of the greatest football teams i've ever watched that happened to lose a really weird game in the superbowl.

Yes...."one of the greatest teams ever, but......".

This is where the Cubs will be if they win 110+ and lose in October.

I still think I'd rather be that than 86 wins and cannon fodder.

Must be getting stale in there.

I actually think Matheny has improved on how he uses his bullpen....my only criticism would be that he doesn't get Lyons enough work. My biggest issue this season has been his lineup decisions. It's great to have Carp and Piscotty with high OBPs at 1-2...but there's nobody to drive them in. Holliday looks every bit of 36, Molina was fine batting #5 when he was hitting .340....there is just a lot of curious decisions being made there.
