Setting the single season win record only matters if that team goes on to win the WS.
Nobody ever talks about that Mariners team that got knocked out of the playoffs early.

Don't know about that. People do talk about that team and can tell you how many games they won, and there are plenty of forgettable World Series winners.
The 2004 Cardinal team is still my favorite. 2006 World Series was great, but that was not an exceptionally fun season.

Only time people bring up that Mariners team it's to make a joke about them getting bumped out quickly. They're not regarded as a legendary team even tho they should be.

Agreed.
And the 18-1 Patriots would agree as well.
2004 was a fun season, but that team will always be stained with losing in the World Series.
And these will be the stakes for the Cubs in October. If they win it all, it will be the greatest thing ever for their fans. If they lose at any point, they will be just another great regular season team who fell short in October.

not really, you hear them talked about as the benchmark for a great regular season. they lost a playoff series to an excellent yankees team loaded with playoff experience and success. it happens.
plus that mariners team was weird because they had a lot of pitchers who didn't throw that hard and outpitched their peripherals, and an offense with crazy situational hitting success and bret boone in his first season as steroid monster.

If they go .500 the rest of the way, they will finish with 90 wins.

Oh hooray. It's not even halfway through May and we're already down to "at least the playoffs can be fluky and great teams lose most of the time." We're not even talking about running them down in the division.
